Breastfed From the Start: Helpful Tips for Mastering Breastfeeding
Breastfed babies have different diaper patterns than formula-fed babies. The color and number of stools will help you know if your baby is getting enough to eat. So, what’s normal in the first week?
Day 1
1 Dirty Diaper – black, thick, sticky
Day 2
2 Dirty Diapers – dark green, less sticky than the first poop
Day 3
3 Dirty Diapers – green, pasty
Day 4
4 Dirty Diapers – greenish, starting to get more yellow and seedy
Day 5+
4 or More Dirty Diapers – mustard-yellow and seedy
Poops need to be the size of a quarter or larger to be considered a dirty diaper. If baby isn’t up to 4 dirty diapers by day 4, contact your WIC Health Professional, a Lactation Consultant or your Healthcare Provider for latch assessment to help ensure baby is getting enough breast milk.
